Taking the Next Step

Standard

The past 7 weeks have been eye opening as I have learned new ways to expand my brand and my use of social media. I’ve learned the importance of promoting my personal brand, which is more than just my reputation. It is really about how others perceive me and what I do and what I stand for. Social media is an excellent way to spread information I want to share. I have learned how to prepare a video and a podcast and use them creatively and effectively so my message has an impact on people. This blog is a perfect example of an easy and effective way to expand.

Social media is a little scary. I learned that I should be smart and careful to be sure that I send the right message. Common sense? Maybe. But sometimes I believe we fail to take action because we are so scared of making a mistake. Using good judgement and reviewing work before it is posted or published is part of that good judgement.

My plan is to continue my blog and include a podcast or video from time to time to make it interesting. Videos and podcasts also allow my audience to connect with me on a more personal level which should strengthen the number of followers and how often they read my content. In six months or so, I plan to re-evaluate my use of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube, as well as this blog, to be sure that I am posting regularly to each of them. Then I will also review analytics if they are available to measure the reach according to those who “liked” or “retweeted” or “shared” my posts. Over the course of the next two or three weeks, I will also identify a more narrow goal as far as my brand. I feel like it is too broad right now but I should be able to narrow it down so that I connect to a target audience – which also needs to be defined a little better.

Stay tuned! I look forward to staying in touch with everyone even after this class has ended.

1st Podcast!

Standard

I am so excited to bring you my first podcast! It is just one way that I am expanding my social media access.  Hopefully you enjoy this test.  It is a test but we have to start somewhere!  Have a wonderful day and thanks for listening.  Let me know if you like the new look of my blog.  Is it too busy?  Ok?  Whatever?  Or do you LOVE it?  Let me know.  And subscribe to my RSS Feed.  That’s new too!

Expanding my Horizons

Standard

I’ve been expanding my presence on social media. It’s been a new experience to create this blog and post to it every week with new information. I’ve decided to expand and create a profile on YouTube in addition to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. The goal is to connect to others with similar interests and to attract people to my sites who are interested in my brand.

Twitter and Facebook are great for posting quick nuggets of information that inspire and encourage others, and maybe even share stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. My podcasts will be posted to YouTube and some will be shared on Twitter and Facebook. I am not sure yet what kinds of topics I will record and post as a podcast, but my passion for encouraging and helping others will be the inspiration. LinkedIn is yet another way to connect with professionals and is not as public as Facebook and Twitter. They all have privacy settings but the purpose of LinkedIn is to connect professionals with other professionals or organizations.

There are several interesting groups on LinkedIn that I’ve joined to help further my goals and interests in communication and motivating others. Inspirational People Development Network and Influencing and Motivating People through Communication are two of these groups that I joined and I’m anxious to start reading their content. It is my hope that I am able to contribute to the groups by submitting content to be posted for others to read and hopefully “like” and “share.”

Morgan Beeler also lists some great links “on ways to create your own happiness.” Check out her blog. There are some correlations between her message and mine such as the Power of Positive Thinking and the Law of Attraction. I will let you know how the week progresses as I expand on my social media.

Interesting (LinkedIn) Places to Visit

Standard

This has been an amazing and fun week for me! How has your week been? Thank you for visiting my blog today. I am in the process of updating my LinkedIn profile and will soon be updating my YouTube page so that I can share inspiration and information that you will want to hear!

This week I added three groups to my LinkedIn profile that will help me connect with people in the fields of communications and human resources. If you are interested in public relations, you might want to request to join https://www.linkedin.com/groups/8132708/profile. This group is specifically for public relations and communications professionals. If your interest is in influencing and leading others, you might consider https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7456814/profile for both communicating with others or motivating and encouraging them, or https://www.linkedin.com/groups/4282333/profile, a group that shares ideas about leadership, management and engagement, and leadership excellence. I’m waiting to be accepted into these groups and hope to see you there!

For a fun review of vlogging, Elisha has some interesting notes on how to expand your vlogging world. See her latest blog at http://thedogtheycalljayne.blogspot.com/2016/02/s-earching-for-great-vlogs-im.html. While her focus this week is on vlogging, you will have an extra treat with the information she has chosen to share on organization.
Elisha also shared a Ted Talks discussion, which I hope you will find inspirational. While you might not need a Kleenex for this video, it helps the listener learn more about the psychology of leadership and why people follow a person or company who leads well. The video is, I think, extraordinarilyordinary. I believe you will be inspired.

Watch it at https://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.

Also, watch for a video from me in a couple of weeks! It will be fun to create even though I’ve never created a video before. See you next week. Let me know what you think and comment if you have any ideas that will help me become better at promoting my brand strategy.

P.S. Connect with me on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/vickie-doane-b4154990?trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile. I am currently in the process of updating my page. Thanks!

Ordinary People Helping Others in Extraordinary Ways

Standard

Oh my goodness! Going through YouTube videos that capture the essence of my blog has been quite an experience. Luckily I had tissues handy. There is evidence of real “normal” people helping others in an extraordinary way. Having been a single mom for several years as a result of leaving a very abusive relationship, I appreciated help from others along the way. I know people who struggle with a number of challenges every single day and it doesn’t usually take much to take just one step to let them know you care. It could be helping out with the kids, buying a small bag of groceries, or just listening at the end of a long day. There were so many videos of simple acts of kindness – helping an elderly person cross the street, rescuing an animal from frigid waters, assisting a disabled person. This one shows the power of the difference one person can make.

And because I was moved by so many videos, I would like to share this one about a community coming together to make a difference for one hearing impaired resident. Samsung also has a part in the video at the end, but the story is extraordinary in my opinion.

What’s So Special About Tea?

Standard

Funny how the simple act of seeing someone enjoying a super duper McAlister’s tea can bring a smile to your face. Morgan Beeler clearly is most interested in letting you know about this delightful experience in her blog https://morganbeelerblog.wordpress.com/ where you can truly connect with her fun spirit. If you’ve never been to McAlister’s Deli, they are notorious for their tea/tea refills not to mention that they have great food! Morgan says “Happiness and satisfaction can lead to an abundance of possibilities” and of course, that is an example of extraordinarilyordinary in my book!

I am in awe of https://chocolaterunnergirl.wordpress.com/2016/01/ who shares inspiration to her readers through recipes and success in her exercise routine, particularly through running. A nanny to two adorable children, she enjoys sharing with others to help them on their journey as they walk through the struggles of eating disorders. extraordinarilyordinary! Knowing her personally, she has a heart for other people and through her writing, she inspires others to live a better life.

Ever heard of the master artist Leonardo DaVinci? What a magnificent life, although toiled with struggle and heartache. I hope you agree that this quote from DaVinci aligns with the ideas in this blog.

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sit back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.”

extraordinarilyordinary! I stumbled across a reference to this artist at http://www.successful-blog.com/1/finding-ideas-outside-the-box/, one of several blog suggestions made by Nick Redington at http://aheadofthebusinessgame.blogspot.com/.

So my question is: are YOU thinking outside of the box in your daily life? What are you doing to be different than the way you were programmed to be? Are you staying inside of the box that SOMEONE ELSE drew for you? Feeling trapped and like there should be more? Well, there is. Whether it is a fun McAlister’s tea to enjoy or a new healthy recipe to share with your family, take just one step outside of the box. (Sometimes we don’t even realize we are in one!) Do one thing that adds value to someone. That someone can even be you. Don’t you find that we often feel better about ourselves, and become stronger, when we are helping someone else? It just takes a shift in our thinking if we aren’t already there.

Although blogger Liz Strauss was really referring specifically to her “Finding Ideas Outside the Box” blog post about inspiring creativity in order to write, she said “All great thinkers – folks we call geniuses – know that there’s nothing new to be gathered by staying where everyone else is doing their thinking. So let’s get on with getting out of it.” Think about what you need to do to get on with it and become extraordinary.

John Maxwell says in http://www.johnmaxwell.com/blog/the-secrets-of-success-week-one-health that it’s “the power of daily decisions” that shapes our lives.

Caz Makepeace offers several suggestions for moving from ordinary to extraordinary in her article http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/how-to-go-from-ordinary-to-extraordinary.html. It just takes an extra step, just like the picture of Morgan bringing a smile while sipping tea. Just one. You can do it! Tell your story here. Go ahead…toot your own horn. You are extraordinary!
